At the “Review of Coffee Re-cultivation in 2014 – 2020 and Orientations” conference, Vice Minister Le Quoc Doanh emphasized that Vietnamese coffee sector had to be developed in a modern, consistent, sustainable and competitive manner. The sector will maintain the production area of 600,000 ha, yield of 2.7-2.9 tons/ha and production of 1.8-2 million tons/year by 2025.
As assessed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), to the end of September 2019, Viet Nam had 20 coffee production provinces which were led by Dak Lak with nearly 210,000 ha, Lam Dong with more than 170,000 ha and Dak Nong of around 130,000 ha. The Central Highlands has become the major concentrated coffee production region of the country. Viet Nam has become one of the world leaders in coffee production and export, and, especially, the world champion of Robusta coffee production and export for years.
During 2014 and 2020, the re-cultivated and grafted area in the Central Highlands totaled 118,202 ha (as of June 2019), fulfilling more than 98.5% of the target, including 84,165 ha of cultivated coffee and 34,037 ha of grafted coffee (mainly in Lam Dong and Dak Nong). Lam Dong re-cultivated coffee in the largest area with 58,200 ha, followed by Dak Lak with 29,000 ha, Dak Nong with more than 16,400 ha, Gia Lai with nearly 12,000 ha and Kon Tum with almost 2,800 ha…
For sustainable re-cultivation, VnSAT project has provided training for 19,614 farmers with 19,322 ha, exceeding the project target, on technical measures for sustainable and adaptive re-cultivation. New varieties have been mainly used for the re-cultivated area, which gradually promotes the yield and quality of coffee bean, especially in the context of climate change.
As planned by MARD, by 2025, the coffee sector will maintain the production area of 600,000 ha, yield of 2.7-2.9 tons/ha and production of 1.8-2 million tons/year; and continue the re-cultivation as well as grafting of old coffee orchards, expectedly for 30,000 -40,000 ha…
